cannot log on as root after upgrade

The generic path for recovery is as follows:

- Boot up in single user mode.
- Manually configure network interface(s).
- cvsup again.
- "make world" in /usr/src, still in single-user mode.
- mergemaster -i
- boot into multi-user mode.

Give that a whirl...
