serial console stops just before login prompt

You need to change /etc/tty's to start a getty on the serial console.
E.g. for the first serial port change

	ttyd0   "/usr/libexec/getty std.9600"   dialup  off secure
to
	ttyd0   "/usr/libexec/getty std.115200" dialup  on secure

That should do the trick.
