serial console stops just before login prompt

Here are the details:

Setup serial console as follows:

o  Added to /etc/make.conf

   BOOT_COMCONSOLE_SPEED= 115200
   BOOT_COMCONSOLE_PORT=   0x3F8

o  make world;make install new kernel

o  write new bootblocks

   bsdlabel -B da0s1

o  Added to /boot/loader.conf
   console="comconsole"

When the machine boots the console output is directed
to the serial port as expected (speed changed to 115200)
up to this point:

   Starting background file system checks in 60 seconds.

   em0: Link is up 100 Mbps Full Duplex

At this point there is no login: prompt on the terminal.

A login appears on the vga output of the machine and
it is possible to login if its booted with the keyboard
attached.

If the keyboard is not attached at boot time, the login:
prompt is displayed but attaching the keyboard at this point
does not give keyboard control.

If  the machine is then rebooted, the console output associated
with the reboot is displayed on the serial port:

JJJboot() called on cpu#1  <-- 'JJJ' just some garbage chars

Waiting (max 60 seconds) for system process `bufdaemon' to
stop...stopped
