This is no longer the case with the ntpd now in use:

revolution > sudo service ntpd restart
revolution > grep ntpd /var/log/messages
Jul  4 09:06:00 revolution ntpd[828]: ntpd exiting on signal 15 (Terminated)
Jul  4 09:06:01 revolution ntpd[61530]: ntpd 4.2.8p10-a (1): Starting

revolution > ntpd --version
ntpd 4.2.8p10-a (1)
