No, not really.
They're very x86-specific, but then, so was FreeBSD for the longest time.
Given the recent advances including a flash-based filesystems for FreeBSD, and being able to co-opt the cross-compiler chain from linux where clang does not yet support cross compilation (e.g. mips) has brought FreeBSD to a point where (finally) the issues around embedded finally are illuminated.
tl;dr: This has been anticipated for a long time.
