Support for Adaptec AVA-2906?

I bought an Adaptec 2906 host adapter to connect an Excrix VXA-1 tape
drive to my sorely-in-need-of-backup home Linux box, assuming it would
just work with Linux, being a common card.

Unfortunately, I'm seeing

scsi : 0 hosts.
scsi : detected total.

when it boots.

Is this card supported? If so, what do I need to do for it to be
recognized? If not, is there a driver that I can use with it? I'd hate
to have to try to return the card and cable. :-(

I'm running RedHat 2.2.16, if that helps identify the version of the driver.
