I did not have PROBE_ALL_LUNS enabled when compiling the kernel. I
tried the following with the 7880util.exe program:
1. Reduce sync down to 20 (lowest setting with ultra enabled)
<no noticeable effect>
2. Disable sync
<no noticeable effect>
3. Initiate wide negotiation disabled
<change in messages as follows (primarily the detection of the cdrom
and the Mode Sense part>
(scsi0:0:0:0) Synchronous at 40.0 Mbyte/sec, offset 8.
Vendor: QUANTUM Model: ATLAS IV 9 WLS Rev: 0808
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 03
Detected scsi disk sda at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
Vendor: CHINON Model: CD-ROM CDS-535 Rev: 020
Type: CDROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Detected scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 4, lun 0
scsi: detected 1 SCSI cdrom 1 SCSI disk total
scsi: aborting command due to timeout: pid 0, scsi0, channel 0, id 4,
lun 0, Mode Sense 00 2a 00 80 00
SCSI host 0 abort (pid 0) timed out - resetting
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0
SCSI host 0 channel 0 reset (pid 0) timed out - trying harder
(last 3 lines repeat indefinitely)
4. Enable disconnect turned off
<no noticeable effect>
5. Disable ultra
<no noticeable effect>
(I have seen a few postings from people who noticed that the synchronous
speed is being reported at 20.0 Mbyte/sec instead of 40.0 Mbyte/sec even
though they have an Ultra adapter. I had the same problem until I used
the 7880util.exe DOS utility (came on the EZ-SCSI disk 2) to enable the
Ultra capability. It seems that the motherboard manufacturer disabled
Ultra by default.)
Any other ideas? Any other information I can provide?
