What kernel and aic7xxx drvr# are you using ?
Look in /usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi/aic7xxx.c
BTW: there is no PII system existing which runs reliably
with more than 512 MB Ram ;-((
Because of mapping the memory down, depend on BIOS-Settings,
what causes crashes oftenly,
or not beeing covered by 2nd-level cache,
better use Pentium-Pro or even better
wait for Xeon (with Slot 2)..., but now we get offtopic here.
email me for more PII-Info.
Go look at linux-kernel-mailing-list

linux-kernel at vger.rutgers.edu

Try the 2.1.102 kernel with 5.0.15 aic-patch,
 ftp://ftp.dialnet.net/pub/linux/aic7xxx/
superstable here 7d uptime

Wow...1Gig Ram, ts ts ts
