Problems with HP Colorado T4000s

Do you know of any issues or problems using a T4000s tape unit with an
AHA2940UW?  I have compiled Linux kernel 2.0.31 but keep getting "read
error on /dev/stape : I/O error" messages from both tar and mt.  I have no
problems with the hardware under NT, so I assume this is a Linux
configuration problem.  Can you suggest anything for me to try or where
else I might find help?  I have no access to news groups.
