I dropped the habit immediately after I discovered that a single file could specify multiple repos. I prefer editing a single file, wherever possible. I sometimes used uclcmd, <https://www.freshports.org/devel/uclcmd/>. I typically aim for three repos in the one file: FreeBSD-base FreeBSD-kmods FreeBSD-ports
