Thanks, people.

(In reply to Ed Maste from comment #7)

On RELEASE, I edited freebsd-update to match the raw content of
<https://github.com/freebsd/freebsd-src/blob/20f0996700a8e60780931e7fde65899040465f4e/usr.sbin/freebsd-update/freebsd-update.sh>
(the most recent version on main).

Success:

root@desktop:/usr/sbin # freebsd-version -kru ; uname -mvKU
14.3-RELEASE-p2
14.3-RELEASE-p2
14.3-RELEASE-p2
FreeBSD 14.3-RELEASE-p2 releng/14.3-n271439-5982521fe3dd GENERIC amd64 1403000
1403000
root@desktop:/usr/sbin # pkg prime-origins | grep base | wc -l
     378
root@desktop:/usr/sbin # freebsd-update fetch
freebsd-update is incompatible with the use of packaged base. Please see
https://wiki.freebsd.org/PkgBase for more information.
root@desktop:/usr/sbin # history 5
    34 0:40 nano freebsd-update
    35 0:40 freebsd-version -kru ; uname -mvKU
    36 0:41 pkg prime-origins | grep base | wc -l
    37 0:41 freebsd-update fetch
    38 0:41 history 5
root@desktop:/usr/sbin #
