Yes, the OpenJDK itself has no knowledge of these port specific
variables. But I thought perhaps the problem was that the port Makefile
tried to do more than one thing at the time?

I'm fine with it. At least as an experiment to see if this fixes the
issues with the pkg builds. If it does, it makes me even more curious
about why this problem only seems to affect certain versions though.
