Yeah +1 to this. Having the wall between base and ports is a major strength. Over the years, I've had to either blat /usr/local and the pkg db and start again on a few systems, or, on others, /usr/local was either on the boot disk or on its own disk and that disk had failed. In all cases, because of this wall, and other operational decisions at the start like zfs-for-data-only, I've been able to *rapidly* restore functionality without data loss. --
