I found x11/budgie similarly unusable. 

The xorg.conf(5) workaround was too difficult for me (I can't make sense of the
manual page). 

Instead, I added LIBGL_DRI3_DISABLE=1 to the setenv line of login.conf(5), for
example: 

        :setenv=BLOCKSIZE=K,LIBGL_DRI3_DISABLE=1:\

– then ran: 

    cap_mkdb /etc/login.conf
