I have one Pi2 with a USB hard disk which does not warn of excess swap, reports 1.7GB of swap and from time to time hangs irrecoverably (no debugger access) at least a couple of times during buildworld cycles. It's a very slight outlier in having a USB2 to PATA bridge instead of USB-SATA on other hosts. Your point about avoiding misconfiguration is well taken in light of the fragmentation issue.
