After upgrading to 7.3, settings in xorg.conf are not obeyed

Have you checked the output of "xrandr" to see if 1600x1200 is listed?

The radeon driver in the ports tree was buggy for me in that regard.  It 
insisted I had a monitor connected to only one DVI port and something hooked 
up to the S-Video port.  I had to manually upgrade the driver to the latest 
available in the freedesktop git repo to get the driver to properly detect my 
monitors.
