Avoiding upgrade to xorg 7.2

While these are all good pointers, my advice to the OP is that these are
"advanced" topics if all you're used to doing is just installing ports and
having them work.  IMHO, the work to come up the curve with all the above
(and such tools as portdowngrade) is going to be at least 2 weeks more than
just biting the bullet and upgrading to xorg 7.2.

Executive summary: dependencies are hard, and contingent dependencies are
almost impossible.  Every OS suffers from this problem; some just paper
over it by only updating their applications at release time.

Again, I strongly recommend just upgrading to xorg7.2.
