Upgrading X Issue

Sorry to be such a pain...I guess my lack of knowledge on the subject leaves me knowing just enough to be dangerous.

When I build a new server and run Xorg -configure and then run startx, I get three white windows with green frames. I'm not sure if this is what you're calling xterm but that is the file I run when I want to create a new window. When this is running there is no /$HOME/.xinitrc file present...which would load KDE like an older system I used to run.

After I upgraded xorg, it crashed and went back to a text console. So I erased /etc/x11/xorg.conf and /root/xorg.conf.new. I then ran Xorg -configure and then ran startx. I then got a complete white screenon the monitor and could see the mouse moving around but no little white/green windows and I couldn't type anything to launch an application.

I have received a reply linking me to the handbook which shows how to load KDE or Gnome. What I really want is to get back to those little white/green windows back so I can start from the basics. After I grasp what I'm really doing I want to load KDE and work with it. But I must admit that once upon a time about 2 years ago, I did a pkg_add -r kde and the damn thing ran for almost 72 hours compiling stuff before I gave up on it and reinstalled to get back to those little white/green windows that just work right off a new install.

Again, sorry to be such a bother but I could really use some solid advice on how to get everything back to the default window manager before exploring more complex designs in Xorg. And thanks again for your patience and advice.

There are some pathname changes so your old xorg.conf file is
incompatible with your new Xorg. Unless you have local customisations,
deleting it and re-running '-configure' is the easiest solution.

By default, startx will not start a window manager - it just starts an
xterm. You will need to create $HOME/.xinitrc to make it do more.
A sample .xinitrc is available in /usr/local/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc
