named stop not stopping

The named script in /etc/rc.d has been working just fine.  We think 
named got wedged and the script could not kill it for some reason.  We 
had to do a kill -9 to make it stop. Then /etc/rc.d/named start worked 
just fine and the stop has been working fine.
