SMP goes away after installworld (4.8-STABLE)

Zounds!   I just booted the same machine/OS and saw this:

SMP: AP CPU #1 Launched!

which made me think I must have booted off the backup 4.8-release
disk... but No, it's the 4.8-stable that I've been complaining about.

In my xterm I still have the next-to-last reboot:

The only difference between the two boots is the disgust I felt
when I turned it off for the weekend between the two reboots.
