Backing up kernel before upgrade - 4.9 - how?

"make installkernel" will rename your current kernel and modules to
kernel.old and modules.old for you.

I tend to explicitly grab a copy of configs (/etc) prior to using
mergemaster; this is purely paranoia on my part.
