AVM A1 and NetBSD 1.6?

Hi,

I'm not familiar with the A1, but know i4b pretty well, and have worked
extensively with the B1 and T1 AVM adapters. AFAIK, there are no known A1
specific bugs in i4b. And i4b is the same for all *bsds, except that
freebsd is the development platform, which means that it tends to have the
latest version.

In general, "SETUP not answered" timeout is indicative of a communication
error with the TA.  Basically, 90% of the cases I'd say you have a borken
cable. There has been at least one known case where the cable worked with
Windows drivers, but still replacing the cable fixed things for the *BSD
side.  Passive cards initialized to slightly different signal timings, I
suppose. Hence, I'd suggest getting a replacement cable... or trying the
other S interface socket in your TA (they often have two, and sometimes
get busted with vacuum cleaners and such).

As to your bsd experience, I've taken calling freebsd "the professional
cousin of linux" (one might argue that the family tree went the other way
around, but that's the easiest intro to someone who hasn't even heard of
bsd ;-). Linux has a high media profile, especially here in its
birthplace, but IMO it's doomed to be the hobbyist's unix with its
development model (unfortunately I refer to quality, not use... I've got
RH and debian installations amidst the *bsd and solaris boxen because of
project needs, and guess which ones are the maintenance nightmares).
