Hopefully no one has mentioned this already, but if the network connector
is there on the back next to the USB ports, did you ensure that it was
enabled in the BIOS?  I have a PowerEdge 400SC with the exact same
internal Gigabit chipset and, although it was enabled by default on this
machine, YMMV.

Just something to check if you haven't already....
