That sounds like an eminently sensible approach.  I've tried the
releng6 version of that patch (which isn't at the above URL but
looking in the k8c1e directory made it obvious) and the laptop now
works correctly when you apply or remove power.  There is an issue
with booting on battery and I need to do some more investigating to
determine whether this is a side-effect of the patch (which I don't
believe) or something else.
