Thanks for the responses about the modules.conf statement not being
correct. Changing it did not fix the problem. The aic7xxx host adapter
"will not" load using the modules.conf, maybe it does on other systems but not
mine. The only thing I could find on this is and I'm not sure
if it relates to my problem.

As a result of bug number: 10418 the Adaptec module may not 
get installed during installation.

Even thou I'm running 7.0 this seems to be the type of problem I ran into.
To work around I just added
/sbin/insmod aic7xxx aic7xxx='verbose'
to my rc.local file
and the adapter loads fine from there
now at least the host adapter gets loaded when booting.
