Hello,
I hope this problem has not been resolved lately as I just subscribed to
this mailinglist ;-)
Here is my problem. I was using a Adaptec 2940 (Bios 1.16) until
recently and ervery thing was perfect. But I just changed for an Adaptec
2940UW Rev. E (Bios 1.32) lately when I bought a Quantum 4.5Gb UW Viking
disk. Since then, I get SCSI Timeouts when I make a big access under
Linux.
I had the same problem under Windows NT, but when I updated to the
latest version of the ASPI drivers (4.57 i think), the Timeout
disapeared...
I tested my card on a system which has normally a 2940UW Rev. C (Bios
1.23) and the same problem happened.
I changed the card at the shop, but the problem is still there with the
new card ;-(
The problem is that I will make a conference in two weeks about the
installation and configuration of Linux, but I am unable to install
Linux on my system !!! I will certainly make the demo with the old
Adaptec card.
My configuration is (without the SCSI descriebed below ;-)
PPro 200 - 128Mb ram - Matrox Millenium II with Rainbow Runner and
Rainbow TV - NE2000 Compatible PCI Network card - SB16 ISA not PnP Sound
Card - Matrox M3D
I've tried to take all the cards away, and to use another Video card (S3
Trio64), but the timeout stays...
Here is a schematic of my SCSI bus:
I am trying to install RedHat 5.1 (linux 2.0.34 prerelease I think)
I've checked my SCSI chain, the terminators on the bus and on the
Adaptec. The same problem stays when I put it on automatic or on the
right position as described in the manual.
Here is a symbolic representation of my SCSI bus:
50 pins bus:
AHA2940UW---HD (id 0)---CD (id 4)---CDR (id 5)(...)
(...)---IN / OUT ADAPTER---Scanner (id 3)---term---Zip (id 6)
68 pins bus: AHA2940UW---HD_Wide (id 2)---HD_Wide (id 1)---term.
Terminator adaptec: Low = Off, High = On or automatic
The problem is still there when I put this bus configuration:
50 pins bus:
AHA2940UW---HD (id 0)---CD (id 4)---CDR (id 5)(...)
(...) ---IN / OUT ADAPTER---term
68 pins bus: AHA2940UW---HD_Wide (id 2)---HD_Wide (id 1)---term.
Terminator adaptec: Low = Off, High = On or automatic
Or even with this one:
50 pins bus: AHA2940UW---HD (id 0)---CD-Rom (id 4)---IN / OUT
ADAPTER---term
Terminator adaptec: Low = On, High = On or automatic
Here is a partial log:
