Adaptec SCSI card and Seagate DAT drive

I have installed Redhat 5.0 on a Compaq at work, I was given
an Adaptec 2940U PCI SCSI card (not my choice since its not
fully supported).

The SCSI card is not recognised at boot time and when I try
to insmod the driver the card is seen but then the driver
never initialises. It seems to go round an endless loop
trying to find the attached SCSI devices.

An excerpt from /var/log/messages which is totaly
incomprehensible to me. Are there any SCSI gurus there who
could point me in the right direction? The card has been tried
with active termination on and off, the DAT drive is internal and
is jumpered as the final device on the bus (there are no others).
Termination is enabled in the BIOS.
