--> after finally getting my 2940u2w to work under linux I found that
--> there is absolutely no improvement over my AIC-7895 (on board). I am
--> getting only 18 mb/s sustained. I talked to the seagate people and they
--> said this is normal. But I know I can get faster because the cheetah on
--> the sgi octane does about 30-40 mb/s. Is there any way of getting
--> faster than 18 mb/s?

Not likely - the measurements on the SGI are bogus.

The Cheetah is a 10,025 or 10,033 RPM drive, depending on model.
Sectors per track varies from 212-227. Taking the best-case-
possible numbers, you can get 18979 KB/sec passing under the heads.
After you reach each track on the cylinder (there are 6-24 heads
depending on model), you incur at least a track-to-track seek
(.9-1.04 msec), so on a transfer of a sequentially stored very
large file, the best transfer rate the drive can sustain is about
18 MB/sec.
