  Fix some issues in change 254760 pointed out by Bruce Evans:
  
   - Remove excessive parenthesis
   - Use KNF continuation indentation
   - Cut down on excessive continuation lines
   - More consistent style in messages
   - Use uprintf() instead of printf()
