With all of the changes that went into pw on head, it would be nice if
bugs like this were _actually_ fixed on stable branches, and the tests
(in and of themselves) could be backported.

Could you please look at the non-API/interface related changes here
and backport them so we could (in theory) keep things relatively
in-sync?
