I think that would be a terrible idea.  I use freebsd-update on my
soekris, but with an NFS-mounted /var/db/freebsd-update, which is far
simpler and less likely to blow up in your face.  IMHO, it is safe for
freebsd-update to assume that mfs is a no-no.
