Might this be a linux vs. FreeBSD difference for
uname -m vs. uname -p use that ports that care about
powerpc64 (for example) need to adjust for? On powerpc64
FreeBSD:

# uname -m
powerpc

# uname -p
powerpc64

uname -m is not specific to the distinction on FreeBSD.

I do not have a powerpc64 linux readily available
to do the comparison. But, as I remember, linux based
systems had uname -m with fairly standardized content
but had uname -p varying in the content that results,
even for the same kernel being in use. (uname -i varied
like uname -p as I remember.)
