I believe what tends to be missed is opportunity cost for having
things that (essentially) nobody uses.  Our time and focus are not
unconstrained and anything in the tree invokes effort.

That's not to say we should work towards a minimal set of everything
(ports, platforms,...), just energy we spend on carrying remnants of
the past is energy we do not spend on the future.
