Unfortunately, the 1.12.5a tarball does not exactly match the github
tag (even when accounting for autoreconf etc.). From the diff alone,
I won't expect functional differences except for some version numbers,
but still... it's a mess of a release.

But you're right - that works a lot better than I expected it to -
I should've tried it before discarding the idea.
