I don't think this is a fair statement.  andreast@ indicated he'd 
be looking into this, it's just not a trival problem (and I don't 
think most GNU/Linux distributions handle this differently, do they)?

If we'd try to change anything here, I bet an -exp run would expose
a lot of fun; even a simple update from GCC 5 to 6 already does that.
