...how this avoids USE_GCC (which is one step on the looong 
journey of reducing GCC as a caretaker for problematic ports).

It would be nice, if not important, to note something like this
in the commit message.

(Other changes noteworthy are the removal of MIDI_DESC and the
addition of USES=localbase.)
