I got a report from two users close in time so I sensed there was some
urgency to commit a fix.  One was a private email, the other one was on
ports@: http://lists.freebsd.org/pipermail/freebsd-ports/2014-May/092146.html

They are needed as long as there are .la files in other ports which
still contain references to them.  Those ports first need USES=libtool
too such that those references are removed.  Examples in this case are
openldap-client-sasl and libetpan.
