xf86 modesetting (or better: try Wayland) should still work with radeonkms,
technically.

But of course it's better to get a modern GPU like Polaris or Vega, supported
by amdgpu.
amdgpu receives lots of attention both upstream and in FreeBSD.
radeon(kms) receives little attention upstream and pretty much ZERO attention
here.
There is currently just no one who is both motivated to work on old (pre-GCN)
GPU support and skilled enough to debug and fix the issues.
