Okay so update on progress, I managed to work out why amdgpu was failing to
load. Some point late last year I did a full reinstall of my OS and restored
from a backup, but my /boot/loader.conf didn't get restored so the
hw.syscons.disable=1 and kern.vty=wt settings were not set.

Running everything with amdgpu now everything works as intended, but mesa-dri
still breaks vesa+swrast.
