--- Comment #8 from Scott Bennett <bennett at sdf.org> ---
I don't have a problem running a graphical browser per se. As stated in
my original description I have a problem with two things: 1) the GPU hangs in
under 35 hours and 2) the driver, instead of doing something rational like
reinitializing the GPU and restoring the screen image, crashes the system
without so much as a sync(). Such a combination is actually much worse than
useless.
The GPU hang, I presume, is due to a bug in the firmware modules loaded by
the DRM driver, which is radeonkms.ko in this case.
My machine is running 11.4-PRERELEASE r360432. I have postponed updating
to the 12.-STABLE version that finally built successfully under the present
system. There is presently no justification for an upgrade's lost time when
there is no production version of FreeBSD available and security patches are
still being made available for the experimental versions that are available,
including the version listed in the previous sentence. Unfortunately, I
naively updated beyond the 11.1 to 11.2 boundary and upgraded my pools, so I
had left myself no way to return to 11.1, the last production release of
FreeBSD. 11.1, is no longer available for production use because no security
patches patches for it are made available since it reached EOL years ago.
