Hm, interesting, I hadn't noticed this errata... I could 100% reliably
panic my 12.1-RELEASE kernel (using i915kms from drm-kmod) by starting
a remote VirtualBox with X11 forwarding - but only if I used the ssh
'-Y' / ForwardX11Trusted option (which I normally do), otherwise it
worked fine.

So I applied the patch from the errata and rebuilt the kernel, and now
there is no panic - but also no Virtualbox... I.e. it just hangs
without ever opening a window when I use -Y. Without -Y it still works
as before. Still, definitely an improvement.:-)
