Option 4 from the list of workarounds fixed the issue.
I didn't try 1 and 3, and 2 is irrelevant (I use fluxbox as WM).

I'm not particularly attached to fluxbox, so I suppose I'll look for another
window manager that works seamlessly, but for now the workaround is hardly
onerous.
