--- Comment #23 from Scott Bennett <bennett at sdf.org> ---
Four days ago I upgraded my system to stable/11 r368269 and then rebuilt
and reinstalled gpu-firmware-kmod and drm-fbsd11.2-kmod. I then rebooted,
logged in, rebuilt and installed windowmaker, and then entered "startx". The
screen went black, and about 11 seconds later the system did a hard BIOS reset.
Apparently, there is no longer *any* support for a Radeon HD 5770, even though
older cards *are* supported, at least according to other posters on this and
other lists.
The following messages appear in /var/log/messages immediately before the
beginning of the messages from the reboot.

Dec 17 13:15:45 hellas kernel: drmn0: ring 0 stalled for more than 10498msec
Dec 17 13:15:45 hellas kernel: drmn0: GPU lockup (current fence id
0x0000000000000008 last fence id 0x000000000000002b on ring 0)

Thus it is clear that neither the firmware bug nor the DRM bug has been
corrected in more recent versions of those modules. Doesn't the x11 team
report firmware bugs to AMD? Doesn't the x11 team report DRM bugs upstream to
whoever is developing/maintaining X11 for LINUX or for whatever? If so in
either case, does any response come back to the x11 team? Has either bug yet
been reported upstream? Pau Amma kindly first filed this PR on my behalf six
months ago, and I have seen no sign of any resolution, except for mantras to
spend lots of money.
As far as I can tell, spending on another GPU is not the answer. A new
GPU is likely not to be supported yet or become unsupported within four or five
years, leaving a very narrow window during which it would actually be useful,
making that a very poor investment of scarce resources.
