mpv is the best player these days. I use Celluloid (ex GNOME-MPV) for a nicer GUI.
for acceleration, VAAPI is the current api. Install vaapi tools and run vainfo to see supported codecs. mpv has lots of flags, but IIRC --hwdec=auto should be enough
