Two edits to my last message:

(1) LLVM_DEFAULT was bumped September 20th, 5 days before the port was updated
to the 9.0 release:

So the bug was closed the 28th, but the default was updated days before the
port was updated.

(2) the thing that broke for me was gnome (or some part of gnome, it's hard to
know for sure since it rendered my laptop unusable in X w/o switching to
something else)...
