FWIW, this kernel panic at shutdown i described in comment #21 has stopped
after i upgraded to FreeBSD 12.0-RELEASE-p1.

Also upgraded were all of the installed packages, notably the DRM related
packages, which are now:
drm-fbsd12.0-kmod-4.16.g20181215
drm-kmod-g20181126
libdrm-2.4.96,1
gpu-firmware-kmod-g20181104
