I can't speak for detecting the LLVM version in base, but ports requiring
devel/llvm* in some fashion often times need items that base has removed.
Example: llvm-config is one program in the LLVM ports but not in base, needed
by www/firefox and mail/thunderbird as their configure scripts explicitly check
for its presence and executes it to find the LLVM port's clang binaries.

You may be able to save some build time somewhat by disabling every option in
the LLVM port, but keep in mind some dependent ports may need some of those
options.
