Thanks for the hint. I will put it on the list for poudriere and let it
build x11-drivers/xf86-input-evdev .

Meanwhile I filed it as https://bugs.freebsd.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=217047
and there is a comment in the PR about trying:
"... native joystick support in games/flighgear rather than emulating
keyboard+mouse via xf86-input-joystick, joytran, antimicro, etc.? See
/usr/local/share/flightgear/Input/Joysticks/ThrustMaster/"

I will give it a try when I can put hands again on my sons laptop.
