A good tool for testing different configurations through a GUI is this:
http://www.freshports.org/x11/arandr/
It's a GUI frontend for xrandr.

If xrandr doesn't see correct values from the EDID, then i think the issue
is with the driver or with Xorg.
Anyone else care to comment?
