You could try to rebuild the kernel without the VESA option. For me and
others this results in usable suspend/resume. I think this is because
the VESA resume code somehow conflicts with the i915kms resume code that
restores the backlight, but I'm not 100% sure.
There might be some graphical glitches after resume. I guess the root
cause of this will only be fixed until the KMS code is updated to Linux
3.8. In the meantime, there are some workarounds and hacks you can try:
